So I have a car, and I'd .... (1 reply)

Hi everybody,

About 14 years ago I bought a new(-ish) Audi A4 1.8 T-Sport; after a couple of years on loan I now have it back and it is still an absolutely brilliant car to drive, but it has no resale value (we-buy-any-car value it at £275).

Maybe it's my age (or what I remember paying for it in 1996 :) ) but I can't give it away and I remember seeing something on top gear about track days and low-grade competing. Where can I do this? I've found places like Castle Coombe but that's £170 plus petrol and that's nearly as much as my car is worth!

Surely there is something I can do that is a laugh and quick (OK, I first said "fast", but I really mean "quick-ish"....and vaguely competitive) where I don't have to buy into anything so expensive? There was a top gear "endurance" run in a field that looks just the kind of thing (except for the tractor).

Is there any life for old [fast] cars?

John

Testing in local area (1 reply)

After rolling at the last race of 2009 in November at Brands, (you have a laugh at my expense here, [www.youtube.com] ). I managed to get the car fixed in time for the first race of 2010 two weeks ago (again at Brands) for it to fail twice in the day due to electrical problems (funny really as Alfas normally have bullet-proof electrics!) .
Car is now hopefully fixed and OK for next weekends races on the Silverstone GP circuit, but I would like to give it a quick blast to check systems before the weekend without booking an expensive testday at one of the regular circuits.

In the distant past, I have used a bit of crappy concrete ex-runway down at Westonzoyland, but came to the conclusion that it was useless for a full racer and I also found the owner somewhat objectionable.

Does anyone in the club know of a suitable venue for a quick test in this area ? The car is reasonably quiet - normally checks at around 94dB).

If nowhere come up, I’ll probably use my other 33 – which is a bit heavier and less powerful, but it will provide me with a few more excuses than usual!

Awkward Hose (no replies)

The awkward to get at hose on my Hawk was changed at Caerwent Garage this week.
I had a piece of hose for them to install but it only fitted the pipe, not the thermostat, previous item was stretched to fit. Merlin MS delivered a new hose there next day and it was duly fitted. Total fee for the work, clips and antifreeze was £5. Including VAT. >:D<
I reckon I will use them again. And again etc.
I will think at least twice about using MMS next time though - £49/meter inc. delivery. Ouch.

Cheap in car camera (no replies)

Someone in work has just bought an interesting toy that might be of interest to those who want to film in car footage.

Basically a keyfob that is a USB video camera - about the size of a normal car keyfob and films in 720x480 video, cost is £9.75, comes from hong kong which is a bit worrying, but theirs arrived in a week. I have seen some pictures with it strapped to the front of a car and they are very good. You have to add a microsd memory card to it, these cost a couple of pounds - about £3 on ebay for a 2Gb one which is good for about 20 minutes film.

Ebay item number is 150410036677

[cgi.ebay.co.uk]

I have ordered one - will bring it along to club night assuming it arrives :)

Hello, sorry and thank you! (no replies)

Hello all!
Firstly, im sorry i couldn't make the AGM. I was fully intending to make it my first, and admittedly long-overdue, club meeting but i had to travel home from Somerset that morning in the wee small hours so i was thouroughly knackered come tea time!
Many thanks for posting my trophies. I always feel it is rather rude not to show up to collect a prize so i thought sencond best would be to post here and say thank you. They look very smart indeed!
The car is laid up at the moment but will hopefully have a new (2nd hand) gearbox in by the first sprint of 2010. Look foward to seeing everyone then :)
Cheers
Martin Mees
