AUGUST TREASURE HUNT
By Dick Craddy
If you want to go to Old Down you don't start at Rudgeway - that's the
view of Rich and Andy who had difficulty in finding the start!
As usual with my, hopefully, straight forward events I set ten tie
deciding questions that had to be completed before setting off. In the
end they were not needed although John and Martin achieved the highest
score which would have consolidated their win.
The route, which was a little barren of clues in some places,
went via Earthcott Green, Itchington, Grovesend, Tytherington, Baden
Hill, Tytherington, Itchington, Alveston via Elberton Gust) to Old Down
- 14 miles in all. Regrettably one unintentional route direction error
in Tytherington Village caused confusion but did not result in any
lasting desire to render permanent harm to me.
The traditional August finish at The Fox at Old Down provided the opportunity for some good beer and conversation in garden.
The first two teams received modest but well deserved awards.
The close "middle order" scoring proved, once again, that a straight
forward route and clue definition can produce a result.
Next year - will I run it backwards ? - wait and see (if I'm asked!).
